PathFlow Threaded Cassettes

Threaded cassettes are simple to load, but they are different than taped. Discover the benefits for your lab and the environment along with best tips for use.

Why threaded instead of taped cassettes?

Threaded cassettes reduce environmental impact.
Since StatLab switched to cardboard threaded cassettes at our Wales (CellPath) facility in 2021, we've used over 384 miles of cardboard threads instead of plastic tape or nylon threads, which end up taking space in landfills. That's equivalent to tape stretching from Indianapolis, Indiana, to Columbus, Ohio, and back again--with miles to spare! Customers across Europe and the United States have successfully loaded over 1.3 million stacks of threaded cassettes into automated cassette printers over the past three years.

Threaded cassettes prevent jamming from tape residue.
Taped cassettes can leave sticky residue on cassettes, which can lead to jams. To combat this, some laboratories remove the tape residue with an alcohol or xylene wipe prior to use, adding time to their workflow, in addition to cleaning the metal plate inside the IPC printer when this occurs. Cardboard threads leave no trace of residue, eliminating this step.

Tips for using threaded cassettes instead of taped:

  • Lay the thread of cassettes on a flat surface to align cassettes and prepare for loading before picking up by the top and bottom to stabilize.
  • Hold the cassettes directly above the hopper with one hand supporting the bottom of the thread. Do not hold the cassettes at an angle.
  • After loading the cassettes down into the hopper, place one finger on the top of the cassette stack to hold in place, while pulling up on the cardboard thread with the other hand.
  • Dispose of the thread, which will naturally decompose in a landfill.

Is large format right for your lab?

Large format processing is used to allow a whole organ section to be studied on one slide instead of multiple slides. It can be used with many tissue types such as bone, bowel, brain, breast, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, prostate, skin, and thyroid, and is excellent to use in clinical labs where multiple cases of these tissue types are processed, Urology labs for prostates, or veterinary labs where vocal cords or jaws are studied.

Improved care

The ability to see tumor profile in large sections at once eliminates the mental jigsaw puzzle of piecing together cases from multiple slides.

Compatible

No need to change processing or staining machines. Only the addition of a clamp is needed for the microtome.

Time savings

No further dissection required to fit into smaller cassettes. Eliminates the need of pathologists to switch between multiple slides.

Cost savings

Reduced number of slides to be processed and cut, saving both time and processing costs in reagents, stains and slides.

"We routinely utilize whole mounts for prostates, melanoma, breast lumpectomies, and even some brain autopsies. Having the ability to visualize the complete margins negates the need to mentally reconstruct the tissue and permits the use of zero magnification photographs. This is an extremely useful tool in our laboratory. It allows us to demonstrate tumor features and growth patterns, all in relation to the margins."
